Web Design Resources & Tutorials to help you design the best website!

When you were in High school did you do the same things that everyone else did ?
I know I didn’t. You shouldn’t be following them either
There’s an old saying “If bob jumps off the bridge do you want to jump off the bridge too?”
| 1 | For every search , for every keystroke Google records it in their little black logs that are backed up on multiple servers across the world.
But why do they want to know what browser you’re using , your geo-location , your ip-address as well as other miscellaneous information. It’s kind of scary if you think about the amount of info Google has on all of us. |
|---|---|
| 2 | Google’s Adsense sounds really great and profiting at first but what most people do NOT know is that in Google’s fine print it basically says that if you break any rules then you will be banned.
Ok fine , but if you have $99.99 in your account and you are banned before you hit the required $100.00 for a payout. Guess what too bad , Google does NOT have to pay you a dime.
It’s a great scam & now I kind of understand why Google generates so much money & profit when they are screwing the publishers. To make things even better even if you did not break the rules or if someone crazy clicked the ads like 200 times then you are again out of luck. Do yourself the favor if you are a publisher and sign up with buysellads. It’s better than having to deal with Google and getting .005 cents for 1-3 clicks a day. |
| 3 | If your a user of Gmail be careful , Google’s new motto soon will be “all your info are belong to us”. Every email you send , receive is scanned and recorded by Google and even if you delete them , you can bet that Google has a copy of it backed up.
|
| 4 | Google’s toolbar is just like spyware it spies/logs every single page you visit / use or query for (creepy). |
| 5 | Google’s cookie will stay on your machine until the year 2038 , so from now till 2038 they will know about every site you will visit. |
| 6 | Google is old and boring. There are other cooler alternatives with more functionality while searching. Check em out : |
|---|---|
| A) Kosmix | |
|
|
| B) Quintura | |
|
|
| C) SearchMe | |
|
|
| 7 | Google no longer has reason to continue innovating it’s search engine because it already has a majority of the internet search industry’s marketshare. |
| 8 | Google says that it will penalize any website that has paid text links or uses textlinkads because it is considered spammy.
Then what the hell is adwords ? Sounds like a monopolistic company crying about potential competition and lost profits. Besides who wants to use adsense? If you do use paid adlinks or publish them such as the new system called InLinks which was introduced by TLA a few months back bought up a lot of controversy. |
| 9 | Through the years of constant use it seems Google is becoming spammed up more than ever.
The funny thing is I dont think google cares much because they will allow people to pay sponsored websites within the search results that are not even related. |
| 10 | Google’s attempt as an alternative to Word & Excel isn’t a full solution. People should instead go with open source programs such as Open office , ThinkFree , Zoho. |
| 11 | Google’s Chrome is not the best answer for bug-free websufring. Sure it may be crash-protected but isn’t firefox also ?
Asides from this you may have a very hard time trying to login to your hotmail account from chrome. Oh and you can’t use it on a Mac or Linux system. |
| 12 | Google’s Youtube has been a wonderful innovation in the way users share videos with one another.
Plus I don’t like the annoying ads that appear in videos as well as the fact that they are selling videos. Are you kidding me Google? Check out these amazing alternatives that have replaced the need for Youtube ; |
| A) Hulu – Watch full episodes of your favorite T.V. Shows | |
|
|
| B) Veoh – Another Great site to watch T.V. Episodes | |
|
|
| C) Truveo – A powerful video Search Engine | |
|
|
| 13 | Google’s widley known blogger is a great free tool for letting people voice and share their ideas but there are services such as wordpress that are exponentially better with more features and less hassle/restrictions. |
| 14 | The latest announcement from Google has some worried about the discontinuation of Google Notebook , as an alternative that is just as functional and sleek is Evernote. |
| 15 | Google Analytics is helpful to the majority who have used it. But there’s one thing that really bugs me about it is that you can not get Live statistics of who’s coming in & out.
A few alternatives to check out : A) Mint (Buy-to-use) B) Stuffed Tracker (Buy-to-use) C) HiStats (Free-to-use) |
| 16 | Google Chat is kind of lame , the true mobile messenger that is universal and easy to use no matter where you are is Meebo!
No software installation needed , just a computer with a working browser and internet connection. It also works with MSN , AIM , Yahoo , etc etc. |
| 17 | Don’t think that you have to give your hard earned money to Google to promote your website When you can do it for free using social networking sites like Digg, Stumbleupon , Del.ici.ous , Propeller , etc. |
| 18 | A great alternatvies to Google’s Reader is Netvibes. |
| 19 | For anyone who uses Google image search engine you can go to other websites that have a multitutde of images , such as PicSearch , DeviantArt or Flickr |
| 20 | For all you bookmark lovers , there are other choices to use other than Google Bookmarks such as del.icio.us |
| 21 | If you want to stick with Google’s search engine then at least improve the way the search engine spits our results.
Use this Firefox Plugin that , attaches a small thumbnail preview image next to the website result. |
| 22 | More Google Adsense Alternatives :
A) BuysellAds B) Inlinks C) AdBrite D) Bidvertiser F) Chitika |
| 23 | Google’s censorship of the Internet in China is complete hypocrisy of Google’s mission statement. |
| 24 | There’s a plethora of alternatives instead of using G-mail that are quite noteworthy (These services offer at least 1GB+ or more email space):
A) Zenbe B) GMX C) Inbox D) Gawab |
| 25 | “You don’t want another Enron? Here’s your law: If a company, can’t explain, in ONE SENTENCE….what it does….it’s illegal.” –Lewis Black |

Really cool stuff. I agree with everything on this list..and it seems like you put a lot of thinking into it.
My only complaint is you were a little too easy on Chrome. Thats just POS browser. It makes IE6 look like a solid product.
Its about time that people start to see the real Goog.
And for email..nothing wrong with Yahoo mail.
As for adsense, I still use it, but it used to be good..but now..all adsense publishers are just counting pennies.

Yes, you were way too easy on Google Chrome. The ONLY reason it exists is because so many people using Firefox are also using adblockers. Adbocker=no adsense, so Google makes less money at your expense. And lately Yahoo mail has been just as good at spam blocking.

Ugh. You need a tinfoil hat. Why are you even on the internet? You think Google is the only one watching you? Your ISP knows more about you then Google does. Get over it. If you don't like it, unplug your computer and go outside!

The whole problem is there really aren’t any great alternatives to Google for search. You mentioned three – all three have very “busy” pages that don’t quickly let you do the thing you really want to do, which is search. Your second choice comes the closest, but it requires javascript to be enabled for even a simple search so for those of us using the Firefox NoScript extension, that’s a non-starter. And by the way, if you don’t let Google set any cookies on your system (or only set them on a per-session basis) then they will not be able to build the profile that you seem to think they are building.
This is not to suggest that I would not like to see something that actually is better than Google – thry’ve been the king of search for about ten years now and in Internet time that’s forever – certainly it’s time for something better. But the problem that any search newcomer faces is how to index the entire Internet (or the vast majority of it, anyway) without having the multitudes of servers that Google has. I’m not even talking about handling thousands or searches per second – you wouldn’t need that at first – I’m talking about the difficulty of indexing everything that’s out there, something Google does very well for the most part. Between that, and the “more on the home page is better” idea that many competitors seem to have, I doubt anyone’s really positioned to de-throne Google today. Actually, I think the competitor that comes closest is AltaVista (which has been around longer than Google!) but they don’t seem to be quite as fast in indexing new sites, or new content on existing sites (just a subjective opinion).

Ok this post is just lame…
Sure you don't NEED google but there are some of us who actually use it and not it's alternatives for a reason…
The conspiracy theory part is quite old. Record keystrokes and websites visited? Why would they want to do a thing like that? I'm sure they can find better uses for their space. Email backups? Sure, if the server that they're hosted on would fail, I'd really want to still HAVE them…
Old and boring? Well excuse me for wanting just a search page when I want to search for something, not a bloated website that I have to wait over9000 years for it to load…
Google docs is for use online, not an alternative office product…
Chrome is still in beta as far as I know. It's probably not better then firefox, but I can tell you it loads 100 times faster. And if I just want to look up something fast, I'd rather not wait for firefox to load…

I love your post but, everything bad you said about google is not like that you are just thinking too much if you know the system.. as a developer you will understand it very well. one thing I know if you will just play fair google will never do bad things to you, people in nature wants to outsmart anyone… and once google saw you are not playing fair specially for adsense … they will surely ban you.
other than that your post was great ^^

This is one of the lamest things I've read for some time. By similar arguments, we could survive without any company, as there are always alternatives. Whoopie-doo.
I happily use Google products where I think they're the best option available, or use competitors products if I prefer them. Big deal.

I must say that I disagree with much of your reasoning, but I think it's important to discuss many of the issues you have brought up. We need to worry about our online privacy. We need to worry about one company having too much control. And I applaud you for doing it in a public setting and allowing others to offer their opinions.
I personally love many of the Google products and services. I am well aware of the privacy concerns, but I am very comfortable that they are completely transparent about the information they gather. And for the most part, it has been my experience that they honor their contracts in a very fair and equitable way.
Thanks for the post!

"Google’s cookie will stay on your machine until the year 2038 , so from now till 2038 they will know about every site you will visit."
Absolutely not true, you obviously have no idea of what cookies are and how they work.

Well, I really like this post. In some points it really make sense. I do agree we can't depends the website traffics come from 1 source too much and can't depends on 1 source for finding information. What happen if this source is no longer available? However I can't deny the I can live without google for now.

Great post, a lot of good ideas here. I wanted to also suggest you check out Adroll as an alternative to Adsense. Full disclosure: I work for them, but regardless I think it's a great option for small to medium sized niche publishers looking for a premium advertising option to augment their Adsense earnings. We offer an extremely high level of transparency with minimal requirements from our publisher base. I hope you'll check us out, and let me know if you have any questions about the product.

I think many of these items need their source stated, it's important to be transparent where you obtain your information from (and that source needs to be authoritative and unbiased). Many of the points seem to be emotive rather than factual. The last point for example, are you accusing Google of fraud in their accounting practises, that is what the comment implies? And did you research whether Google can explain their business in one sentence. A quick search of their company overview gives: "Google's mission is to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." That sounds like a one sentence summary of the company. About 22 of your points can be picked apart like this, I suspect that this is a personal PR stunt rather than a serious positing.
